Why We Manufacture in the UK

When people visit EMP Designs, they're often surprised by how much happens under one roof.


Electronic design. PCB assembly. Firmware development. Mechanical machining. Product testing. Small batch manufacturing. Prototyping.


Almost everything we create is developed and built here in the UK.


It's not because it's the cheapest option.


In fact, it rarely is.


We manufacture in the UK because it allows us to build better products, respond more quickly to our customers and develop new technology at a pace that simply wouldn't be possible if we outsourced everything overseas.


Speed Matters


Many of the industries we work with don't have the luxury of waiting months for a product.


Film productions move quickly.


Visitor attractions have opening dates.


Industrial customers often need problems solving immediately.


For us, development speed is just as important as manufacturing quality.


Every electronic product starts with a design. Once that design is complete, it needs to become a physical prototype that can be tested, evaluated and refined.


If every design iteration requires weeks of waiting for external manufacturing, development slows dramatically.


By carrying out almost every stage in-house, we can move from design to tested hardware in a matter of days rather than weeks.


That speed allows us to refine products far more quickly and ultimately deliver better solutions to our customers.


Prototypes Shouldn't Take Weeks


One of the biggest challenges with outsourced manufacturing is prototyping.

Large contract manufacturers are understandably focused on production volumes. Building hundreds or thousands of boards is their business.


Producing a single prototype isn't.


Although specialist prototype services exist, they can still involve significant lead times and setup costs.


When you're developing completely new technology, waiting several weeks just to discover whether an idea works simply isn't practical.


That's one of the reasons we invested heavily in our own manufacturing capability.


Having production equipment in-house means we can build one prototype today, test it tomorrow, make improvements and often have the next revision running just a few days later.


For research and development, that flexibility is invaluable.


Complete Control Over Quality


Designing and manufacturing under one roof creates a feedback loop that simply doesn't exist when every stage is outsourced.


Our design engineers work alongside our manufacturing team every day.


If a PCB could be easier to assemble, we know immediately.


If a connector position can be improved, we can change it.


If a test fixture would speed production, we can design one ourselves.


The people designing the products are only a few metres away from the people building them.


That close collaboration helps us continuously improve both our products and our manufacturing processes.


Supporting UK Manufacturing


While we manufacture as much as possible ourselves, no company can make absolutely everything.


For specialist processes such as PCB fabrication, metalwork, powder coating and certain precision machining operations, we work with carefully selected UK suppliers.


Working with local manufacturing partners offers several important advantages.


We can visit their facilities, understand how they work and inspect quality first-hand.


If required, components can often be collected directly rather than waiting for shipping.


Large fabricated enclosures are easier to transport, communication is simpler and any issues can be resolved much more quickly.


Strong relationships with local suppliers help us maintain the responsiveness that our customers rely upon.


Reducing Delays


Manufacturing overseas can work extremely well for high-volume production, but it inevitably introduces additional time into every project.


Even when manufacturing itself is fast, there are still shipping times to consider.

There are customs procedures, import duties and logistics that all add complexity.


If a component arrives with a problem, replacing it may involve another international shipment and another delay.


When deadlines are tight, that uncertainty can become a real challenge.


Keeping manufacturing close to home allows us to respond much faster when plans change—which they often do.


Flexibility for Bespoke Projects


Very few of our projects are identical.


One week we might be producing a single prototype for a proof-of-concept.

The next week we could be manufacturing several hundred production units.


The week after that, we might need to modify an existing design to meet a customer's changing requirements.


Because we control the manufacturing process ourselves, we're able to adapt quickly without relying on external production schedules.


That flexibility is one of the reasons many of our customers continue to return to us for bespoke electronics development.


More Than Electronics


Our in-house capability extends beyond PCB assembly.


We also prototype mechanical parts, machine enclosures, prepare product graphics and carry out product assembly and testing from our Camberley workshop.


Having these disciplines working together means we can develop complete products rather than simply supplying electronic boards.


It's an approach that allows us to solve problems more effectively and produce solutions that are ready for real-world use.

Building an in-house manufacturing facility isn't inexpensive.


The equipment, the expertise and the ongoing investment required represent a significant commitment.
