Building Electronics for Props: Bringing Creative Ideas to Life

Behind every convincing futuristic gadget, magical artefact or illuminated hero prop is a piece of engineering that nobody in the audience ever sees.
At EMP Designs, designing electronics for props has been part of what we do for almost as long as the company has existed. Over the years we've worked with prop makers, practical effects teams and production crews to create bespoke electronic systems that disappear inside props while delivering reliable, repeatable performance on set.
Every project is different, but they all start in much the same way.
It All Starts with an Idea
Most projects begin with a conversation.
A client will contact us with an idea, a sketch or a technical challenge that needs solving. Sometimes it's simply a phone call explaining how a prop needs to behave. Other times we'll receive detailed drawings, CAD models or 3D files that allow us to begin designing immediately.
As we've worked with many of our clients over the years, we've developed a shared understanding of what information is needed and how we can work together most effectively. The earlier we're involved in the design process, the easier it is to integrate the electronics into the finished prop.
Designing Around the Space Available
Unlike conventional electronic products, props are rarely designed around the electronics.
Instead, the electronics must fit inside the prop.
That means every millimetre counts.
Whether we're designing for a handheld device, a piece of costume, a practical light or a hero prop destined for a close-up camera shot, the available space is often incredibly limited.
Our job is to design a PCB that fits perfectly within those constraints while still delivering all of the required functionality.
Sometimes that means positioning LEDs so they align precisely with lenses or light pipes. Other times it means designing unusual board shapes that follow the contours of the prop itself.
Every project presents a new packaging challenge.
More Than Just Flashing Lights Props
Many people assume prop electronics simply make LEDs flash.
In reality, modern props often contain electronics that rival those found in commercial products.
Lighting effects need to be smooth, repeatable and controllable. Multiple outputs may need to work independently, colours may need to change, animations have to play perfectly, and everything has to perform reliably take after take.
As productions have become more ambitious, so too have the expectations placed on the electronics hidden inside the props.
Wireless Control as Standard
Today, many of the props we develop are controlled wirelessly using CRMX (Wireless DMX).
This allows lighting technicians to adjust brightness, colours and animations remotely without the need for cables running to the prop.
For productions, this offers enormous flexibility.
A prop can be carried by an actor, passed between performers, rolled across a floor or used in locations where cables simply aren't practical.
Wireless control also allows lighting effects to remain perfectly synchronised with the rest of the production, giving the crew complete control while keeping the technology completely hidden from the audience.
Every Board Has to Do More
Over the years we've seen a significant shift in what clients expect from prop electronics.
Early designs often consisted of little more than a simple lighting controller powered from an external battery pack.
Today's electronics are far more sophisticated.
Many of our boards now integrate:
Wireless DMX receivers
Microcontrollers
LED drivers
Battery charging circuits
Power management
Rechargeable battery support
Protection circuitry
Status indicators
Programming interfaces
The result is a complete, self-contained electronic system that fits inside a remarkably small space.
Designing for Real-World Productions
Film and television environments are demanding.
Props are handled repeatedly, transported between locations and often subjected to conditions that would challenge conventional electronics.
Some are dropped.
Some are carried all day.
Others need to remain operational for long shooting schedules without interrupting production.
Our electronics are designed with those environments in mind.
Reliability isn't simply desirable—it's essential.
Rapid Prototyping
One of the biggest advantages of designing and manufacturing in-house is speed.
Once we've agreed the specification, we're often able to design, manufacture and assemble prototype electronics within days or, for more complex projects, a matter of weeks.
That rapid turnaround allows prop makers to continue building while electronics are being developed, reducing delays and giving productions more time to test and refine the finished prop before filming begins.
If changes are needed—as they often are—we can modify the design quickly and produce updated hardware without waiting for lengthy external manufacturing lead times.
Working as Part of the Team
Successful prop development is always collaborative.
Our role isn't simply to supply a circuit board.
We work closely with prop makers, designers and production teams to understand how a prop will be built, how it will be used and how the electronics can best support the creative vision.
Sometimes that means adapting the electronics to suit a mechanical design.
Sometimes it means suggesting a different technical approach that creates a better on-screen effect while simplifying the overall build.
The best solutions are almost always developed together.

The audience rarely notices the electronics inside a prop—and that's exactly how it should be.
When everything works perfectly, viewers simply believe what they see on screen.
Whether it's a futuristic control panel, a glowing artefact, a practical light source or an interactive handheld device, the electronics should enhance the storytelling without ever drawing attention to themselves.
