Explore Our Projects
Each project we undertake is a blend of inventive thinking, technical precision, and hands-on craftsmanship. From bespoke electronics to full-scale industrial systems, our case studies reveal how we solve complex challenges with creativity — delivering solutions that are both practical and inspirational.
At EMP Designs, we specialise in the design and development of bespoke electronic systems for props used in film, television, theatre, and live experiences. We work with production teams, prop makers, and designers to transform static or mechanical props into fully interactive, controllable, and reliable electronic systems that perform consistently.
Every project is different, and we build electronics specifically around the creative and practical requirements of the prop. This can range from simple illuminated effects through to complex interactive systems involving sensors, wireless control, sound, motion, and synchronised behaviours.
Custom Electronic Design
Our in-house team design and manufacture custom electronic systems tailored to each prop. This includes PCB design, embedded programming, power management, and integration of control systems that are compact enough to be hidden within props without affecting their appearance or usability.
We regularly develop solutions involving:
LED and pixel lighting systems
Wireless control and remote triggering
Battery-powered electronics for standalone operation
Sensor-based interaction (touch, proximity, motion, time-of-flight)
Sound and audio integration
Bespoke miniaturised control boards for tight internal spaces
Seamless Integration into Props
A key part of our work is ensuring that electronics are fully integrated into the prop without compromising design, durability, or performance. We collaborate closely with prop builders and designers to ensure electronics are mechanically supported, serviceable, and robust enough for repeated use in demanding production environments.
We understand the practical realities of set use, including fast turnaround times, repeated handling, and the need for reliable performance under pressure.
Control & Interactivity
Where required, we develop control systems that allow props to be operated in real time or triggered remotely as part of a wider production system. This can include integration with DMX, Art-Net, wireless networks, or bespoke control protocols depending on the production workflow.
We also build interactive behaviours where props respond to user input, environmental triggers, or pre-programmed sequences, adding depth and realism to the final effect.
Prototyping to Production
We support projects from initial concept through to final production units, including:
Concept development and feasibility testing
Rapid prototyping and proof-of-concept builds
Electronics design and embedded software development
Mechanical integration support
Final build, testing, and commissioning
Whether it’s a one-off hero prop or a full production run, we ensure consistency, reliability, and repeatable performance.
Built for Production Use
Our systems are designed specifically for use in professional production environments. That means robust construction, reliable operation, and thoughtful design that considers everything from battery life and heat management to service access and on-set usability.
At EMP Designs, we combine electronics engineering with an understanding of creative production to deliver props that don’t just look right — they perform exactly as intended, every time.
