Growing Engineers at EMP Designs

At EMP Designs, we're very proud of the technology we develop.


But we're equally proud of the people developing it.


This month, we're delighted to celebrate three members of the EMP Designs team reaching important milestones in their engineering careers.


Lewis has achieved his HND qualification, Oliver has achieved his Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician qualification, and Teo has achieved his Level 3 Engineering Technician BTEC.


A huge congratulations to Lewis, Oliver and Teo. These qualifications represent a great deal of hard work, commitment and determination alongside their day-to-day roles at EMP Designs. We’d also like to say a very genuine thank you to all three of them for the enthusiasm, effort and contribution they bring to the business. We’re incredibly pleased to have them as part of the EMP team and proud to see them continuing to develop as engineers.

Even better, this isn't the end of their studies. All three are continuing onto the next level of their qualifications, developing their knowledge alongside the practical engineering experience they gain every day at EMP Designs.


Their achievements are a great opportunity to celebrate their hard work, but also to talk about something that is very important to us as a business:


Growing engineers.


Learning by Doing


Engineering is difficult to learn from a textbook alone.


Understanding the theory is essential, but there's an enormous amount that comes from being presented with a real problem and being asked:


“How are we going to solve this?”


That's something our team experiences regularly.


The nature of the work we do means there often isn't an established solution. In fact, our customers frequently come to us precisely because the technology they need doesn't already exist.


For someone developing their engineering career, that creates an unusual learning environment.


You might be helping design a PCB, testing a prototype, investigating a component, diagnosing a manufacturing problem or working out why something isn't behaving quite as expected.


Most importantly, you get to see what happens next.


Because our design, development and manufacturing are all carried out in-house, our team can see the journey from an idea on a screen or a prototype on a bench through to a finished product leaving the building.


Finding the Answer


One of the principles we believe strongly in is that developing an engineer isn't about always giving them the answer.


It's about helping them learn how to find it.
