Explore Our Projects

Each project we undertake is a blend of inventive thinking, technical precision, and hands-on craftsmanship. From bespoke electronics to full-scale industrial systems, our case studies reveal how we solve complex challenges with creativity — delivering solutions that are both practical and inspirational.

At EMP Designs, we specialise in the design and development of bespoke motion control and automated systems for film, television, theatre, live events, and specialist installations.

From simple automated movements to highly complex multi-axis systems, we create custom solutions that combine mechanical engineering, electronics, software development, and real-time control into reliable, production-ready systems tailored to each project’s unique requirements.

Custom Automation Solutions

Every project presents different creative and technical challenges. Whether it’s animating scenic elements, synchronising movement to lighting or video playback, controlling kinetic installations, or developing autonomous robotic systems, we design each solution from the ground up to suit the application.

Our systems can incorporate:

  • Linear actuators

  • Servo and stepper motors

  • Multi-axis motion control

  • Robotic positioning systems

  • Wireless communication

  • Sensor integration

  • DMX, Art-Net, and network-based control

  • EtherCAT and industrial automation platforms

  • Safety interlocks and monitoring systems

We work closely with clients throughout the design process to understand the desired movement, speed, force requirements, environmental constraints, and operational workflow before developing a tailored control solution.

In-House Design & Development

All mechanical, electrical, and software development is carried out in-house at our workshop in Camberley, Surrey. This allows us to rapidly prototype, test, refine, and commission systems while maintaining complete control over quality and functionality.

Using platforms such as Beckhoff TwinCAT, custom embedded electronics, and advanced control software, we develop systems capable of delivering smooth, accurate, and repeatable motion even in demanding production environments.

Our experience ranges from compact hidden automated mechanisms to large-scale moving scenic installations and autonomous robotic systems.

Creative Motion Engineering

Many projects require movement that feels natural rather than purely mechanical. We regularly develop custom motion profiles and mathematical movement models to create organic, cinematic motion that integrates seamlessly into live productions and filmed environments.

This includes:

  • Synchronised motion sequences

  • Smooth acceleration and deceleration curves

  • Dynamic movement effects

  • Interactive and reactive systems

  • Playback and cue-based automation

  • Real-time operator control

Safety & Reliability Safety

is a critical part of every automation project we undertake. Our systems are designed with appropriate safety monitoring, emergency stop functionality, interlocks, and detection systems to ensure safe operation around cast, crew, operators, and audiences.

We have experience integrating:

  • TwinSAFE systems

  • Safety scanners

  • Emergency stop circuits

  • Position monitoring

  • Collision detection

  • Automated shutdown procedures

From Concept to Installation

We can support projects through every stage of development, including:

  • Initial concept development

  • Mechanical and electronic design

  • Software programming

  • Prototyping

  • System integration

  • On-site installation

  • Testing and commissioning

Ongoing technical support

Whether you require a single automated effect or a fully integrated motion control system, EMP Designs can deliver a bespoke solution engineered specifically for your production or installation.
