Modified Maglite torch converted for console-controlled RDM operation on set

RDM-Controlled Torch Retrofit Project

Smart Torch Conversion for On-Set RDM Control

This project focused on retrofitting a practical Maglite torch to enable full control via RDM (Remote Device Management), providing a smarter and more repeatable lighting solution for use on set.

To achieve this, we integrated our  2 Channel RDM controller directly inside the torch housing, allowing the unit to be operated remotely through a lighting console rather than manually switched on and off.

Internal Controller Integration

The retrofit required careful modification of the torch body. The original housing was adapted by drilling through the area where the standard switch would normally sit, creating space for an antenna to pass through. Inside the torch, we installed:

  • A custom two-channel RDM controller

  • A dedicated battery setup

  • A bespoke internal mounting solution

Custom 3D-Printed Housing

To ensure the electronics were secure and safe within the torch, we designed and produced a custom 3D-printed enclosure from scratch. This prevented the board from moving or rattling during use and ensured the components fit neatly within the unique internal shape of the torch.

These prints follow the same principles used in other prop electronics builds, but each housing must be tailored to the specific prop design.

The parts were printed using a Bambu H2D printer, chosen for its speed and reliability. We used ABS material, offering a good balance of durability, cost-efficiency, and rapid turnaround.

On-Set Benefits

With the controller installed, the torch can now be operated entirely through RDM, offering significant advantages during filming:

  • Remote on/off and control via lighting console

  • Consistent timing and repeatability across multiple takes

  • Reduced pressure on actors, eliminating the need for manual switching

  • Potential for programmed lighting cues and patterns

Lighting Modifications

For this specific build, no changes were needed to the light source itself, as the torch already contained an LED module. However, in previous Maglite conversions, we have replaced traditional tungsten bulbs with custom LED systems when required.

Fast Turnaround and Scalability

This retrofit was completed under a tight schedule, with an initial turnaround of just three days. Five units were built for the first stage of production, with an additional five now in progress to meet a total of ten torches.
