High-Visibility Flip-Dot Display for Outdoor Installations

This project was developed for a client seeking a bold, animated entrance feature capable of performing reliably in full outdoor conditions, including direct sunlight. In addition to durability, achieving a strong, clearly defined colour in bright ambient light was a key requirement.
To meet this brief, we created a demonstration using flip-dot technology, integrated with our in-house mapping software and control hardware. This allowed us to drive animated content across the display, proving that dynamic visuals could be achieved even with a non-traditional, mechanically driven pixel system.
Flip-dots present a unique visual and sensory experience. Unlike conventional LED displays, they operate as a binary pixel system, physically flipping between states to create imagery. This not only delivers excellent visibility in daylight but also introduces a distinctive mechanical sound as the display updates—adding an additional layer of engagement.
While the pixels are not full-colour in the traditional sense, the system remains highly effective for bold graphics and animation, particularly in environments where standard emissive displays can struggle. The result is a robust, characterful solution that combines reliability, visibility, and a memorable physical presence—ideal for high-impact entrance installations.
